Puerto Rico

In December, Genevive was guiding for a retreat in Puerto Rico, so we took some time to explore the island before she had to work. I’d never really had Puerto Rico on my radar as a destination, but it absolutely should be on yours. Beyond the ease of travel and the familiar logistics of the mainland, the island offers a visual rhythm that is incredibly grounding.

In my previous life as a commercial photographer, I was always hunting for the ‘loud’ moment—the peak action, the direct eye contact, the dramatic narrative. But looking through these frames, I realize my lens has moved toward a quieter frequency. Now, as a designer, I find myself captivated by the architecture of a leaf or the way a shadow bisects a centuries-old wall in San Juan.

These photographs aren’t about the ‘who’ or the ‘what’ of the trip. They are about the ‘how’: how the light feels at 4:00 PM against weathered stucco, and how the lush, chaotic green of the rainforest can be found in the smallest, most intimate patterns.
